A.  METHODS EXAM

Answer ONE of the following questions:

1. Grounded theory is arguably one of the most well-known and widely-used strategies of qualitative analysis in sociology. Imagine you have been asked to be a guest speaker in a graduate seminar in qualitative methods with the charge of describing grounded theory and its development. Write the script of your talk, explaining what grounded theory is (in general) and describing its development. Please spend some time discussing a constructivist approach to grounded theory, detailing how to do such an analysis and also discussing the attendant epistemological assumptions and unique methodological aspects of it (in comparison to other types of grounded theory approaches, for example). Where possible, please describe examples of grounded theory research.

2. You are asked to design a graduate-level seminar on Qualitative Methods. Give an overview of at least 4 key dimensions that you will cover. Include a brief overview of each dimension addressing its strengths and weaknesses. For each dimension, draw on your knowledge of the research in family and gender sociology to provide examples of its application.

Answer ONE of the following questions:

3. Compare and contrast "qualitative" and "quantitative" approaches to sociological research on families and work. Include discussion of the: (a) research purpose; (b) assumptions about the observed and observer; (c) role of theory, (d) data collection strategies and (e) criteria used to assess research quality.

4. A student approaches you about doing a research project. They are interested in researching gender and work. What advice would you give them about designing their study? As a sociologist, what are the primary methodological considerations they should be aware of? How would you propose to conduct such a study? Explain your choices, using examples from the literature to illustrate your points.

B. PRIMARY SPECIALIZATION EXAM: GENDER & FAMILY

Answer two of the following questions:

1. Compare and contrast the social and cultural dimensions of family and gender in the US with family and gender in East Asian Societies. How does the East Asian context differ from the American context? Are there differences in how sociologists approach family and gender in the US compared to the East Asian context? What can be gained by studying family and gender from a sociological perspective in the East Asian context?

2. You are invited to contribute an article on recent trends in gender and family scholarship. Identify at least 3 dimensions that are central to understanding gender and the modern family. To what extent does social change impact family and gender dynamics? Be sure to include specific examples in your discussion.

3. Families around the world are encountering a number of profound and far-reaching changes and challenges in the opening decade of the 21st century. Identify and discuss three of the most significant changes and/or challenges that are shaping families globally and provide a list of scholars and research/scholarship that inform your discussion. What are the difficulties associated with studying the comparative impact of global changes on families? How do social scientists attempt to overcome these difficulties?

Answer one of the following questions:

3. The sociology of gender has developed quickly in the last twenty-thirty years. Please map the field as you see it. In so doing, please discuss theoretical as well as empirical developments. As well, please trace important debates and central critiques. Finally position your research in relation to this field today. In other words, how do you see your work drawing upon sociology of gender and extending it.

4. One major development in sociology of gender scholarship in the last two decades has been a more complicated understanding of the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and nation. A central part of that discussion has focused on how intersectional oppressions function within institutionalized systems of inequality. Please explain what is meant by "the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and nation," outlining the major works and various conceptualizations. Please also describe various responses to different conceptualizations and discuss what you think is the most valuable for research you plan to conduct.

C. SECONDARY AREA EXAM: FAMILIES & WORK

Answer one of the following questions:

1. Researchers have documented an ongoing wage gap between men and women in the same occupations. How do researchers explain this gap?

2. Discuss the concept of "gendered occupations." Explain how the benefits and challenges associated with gendered occupations differ for men and women. What are the career-related benefits and challenges experienced by women who work in these occupations? What are the family-related benefits and drawbacks of working these occupations for women?

Answer one of the following questions:

3. Describe the "breadwinner-homemaker model" of role specialization in the family. How relevant is this model for 21st century families? What alternative conceptualizations of gender and work in the household have been offered? Identify the conceptualization you find to be the most useful explanation of family roles and explain why.

4. The literature on families and work has increasingly focused on spillover and family-work conflict. Discuss these concepts. Describe how the effects of these dimensions vary by gender. How do these effects vary over the family life cycle? Discuss at least 2 challenges faced by women working outside the home that have been identified in literature on family and work.

D. THEORY EXAM

Answer one of the following questions:

1. There are many theoretical approaches to studying women and experiences of work and family. Briefly discuss various possible theoretical approaches (e.g. various feminist theories) you could use in your own work, and then identify the theoretical approach (e.g. feminist standpoint theory) you will use in your dissertation research on women, work and family. Describe that theoretical approach, its development and its core concepts. In addition, justify the appropriateness of this theoretical approach for your dissertation work.

2. You are asked to give a talk on the topic of gender in contemporary American society, and decide to begin with a brief review of the fundamental theoretical positions in the field today. What are these positions? Which authors would you include in this introduction, and how would you situate their work in relation to these positions?

Answer one of the following questions:

3. What do you consider to be some of the ways macro-level social processes are related to small-scale interpersonal interaction? Please discuss the work of two social scientists who provide some insight into the nature of this relationship, and present your own assessment of the connections between structure and agency in the social world.

4. Identify one major theoretical perspective in the field of sociology and provide an overview of it, presenting what you consider to be some of its strengths and weaknesses. Include in your answer two major authors operating from this vantage point and discuss some of their contributions to this perspective.
